Become a Teacher Creator...It is Easy, They Said!

You're talented, they said. You are awesome and you are a leader, they said. You are a hard worker and need to create your own material, they said. It will be easy and you can make so much money, they said!

Does this sound familiar?

Well, let me tell you, I went all in on this well intentioned and motivating advice. Two months later, I have made $28.17 on my Boom Learning  journey and a whopping $6.75 on my Teacher Pay Teachers store
The well intentioned motivators above, who constantly cheer me on, mainly my family, certainly had no clue the hard work I was going to face. And, quite frankly, neither did I. I thought, "OMG! if other teachers love boom cards as much as I do, there must be a place for me." Well, let me tell you, there definitely is a place, but some of what I am learning is that:

  • You have to really work hard on honing in on one area of your work and get great at it because there is stiff competition. As you grow your following, you can move on to other areas of focus.
  • You have to build a following. Get your name out there!
  •  I am thinking my next step and probably one you might want to do is creating a youtube channel with how-to videos, etc... This will help get some well needed traffic your way.
  • Starting to become a creator is time consuming in the beginning as you are trying to figure it all out. I recommend setting some time limits for yourself because if you are anything like me, you might be spending way too many hours on your computer.  It can get addicting!

Regardless of what happens, the one thing that keeps me going is the one reason I started doing this in the first place and that is the need to help my own students. My goal was and still is to create as many boom cards and other types of work before school ends so that my students have access to them during the summer. If they are bored or if their parents want them working on educational activities, they will know that they have access to their boom cards account or other work that I have made for them. This will keep their brains growing!

So, am I really doing that bad having made less than $35? Nah...I am a winner. I am meeting my goal and setting up my students for the summer and so I consider myself a success! Set small goals and remember that it will be hard but you too can do it. There is a lot of room for us out there. We can make it. It may not happen over night or over a year, but it will happen if we keep at it and really stay focused on creating work that our own students would use.

Do not become discouraged. Ask me anything you want. I will help you in any way that I can but remember I too am a novice at this. Eighteen years in education, a masters degree, and I am still a novice. How about that? :)  We can do all things!

Wishing you nothing but the best!
